What is Sea Surface Temperature?

The temperature of the very surface of the ocean as measured from satellites or the temperature just below the ocean surface as measured from ocean buoys or other platforms.

Why is Sea Surface Temperature important?

SST has a substantial influence on the weather that we experience and the Earth’s climate system. SST also provides an indication of what the conditions are like for life in the upper reaches of the ocean.

What is unique about this tool?

SEACOOS collects SST from many different sources to improve spatial and temporal coverage for a more comprehensive view of the ocean surface. This web interface is designed to accommodate casual observers and well as experienced investigators
