Instructions for Using the SEACOOS Interactive Map

The interactive map displays a variety of oceanographic data collected by partner institutions across the SEACOOS region. The default map view shows near real-time Wind and Sea Surface Temperature observations over the entire SEACOOS domain. Your browser will need JavaScript and Cookies enabled for proper function of the interactive map.

To return to this document while using the interactive map, click on the "?" icons embedded within each section of the map page.

TERMS OF USE

Use of any map image obtained from SEACOOS.ORG must be cited as "Map created by SEACOOS partners".

MAIN MAP

The main map presents SEACOOS map layers, regional extents, and temporal parameters from user input. Users may also alter map display parameters within the map. Clicking on the direction arrows surrounding the main map moves the map extents in that direction. Additional information is provided through the legend (specific to the layers displayed) and scale bar. Use the View the Map in a New Window option below the main map to open a larger, non-interactive map in a new window. Use the Interactive Map Size box to specify the size of the main interactive map. Use the Turn off embedded legend link to remove the legend from the map image. Use the Select a legend to View dropdown box to open a popup window with a legend for the data layer you choose. This is most useful when multiple layer legend pairs are required. Use the Clear map settings link to clear zoom, layers, and settings, returning the map to its default display. Use the Save Map settings link to save your map settings for activation in your next site visit.

CURRENT VIEW

This shows the date and time of observations displayed in the main map. These temporal parameters may be changed in the Go To Time section. Here you may also add the current map to your cart by clicking the Add to Cart button. You might add maps to your cart in order to print or save them during your SEACOOS.org visit. Click the View cart button to view maps you have added to your cart.

GO TO TIME

SEACOOS in-situ observations are posted to the map hourly and reflect near-real time measurements. Remotely sensed images are downloaded directly from each satellite as they pass over the region so availability is only limited by overpass times and locations. To see maps for other time periods or dates, select a date and time from the pull down menus and click "GO". You may also choose what local time zone you would like to input time parameters in. The map and Current View frame will update to reflect your new input.

ANIMATION

The Animation feature allows you to view changes in SEACOOS observations over a period of time (limited, of course, according to the data files on record). Animation time inputs are always relative to the time displayed in the Current View frame. To utilize this feature, select a time period from the Show last dropdown box and an animation time interval from the Show each dropdown box. This determines when the animation will start and the time interval between animation frames.

If these preset values don't cover the time period you are interested in, click the custom button to create a custom animation with your desired animation time parameters. A "Custom Animation" popup window will let you specify a start date/time (From), end date/time (To), and animation time interval (Show each).

Once the animation time parameters are set, click the film icon to start a Java controlled animation, which will play in the map window. The animation map will contain the Map Layers selected when the animation was started. The animation will display changes in those observations over the time period you've designated, at the time interval you've specified. The .gif button will begin the same animation loop without these Java-based animation movement controls.

During the animation, the map displays the animation date and time as well as movement controls that allow you to start, stop, rock, iterate frame by frame, or vary the speed of the animation. The .gif button will begin the same animation loop without these Java animation movement controls. Click the Exit Animation button located beneath the Map Layers to stop the animation loop.

***Please note that the utility of these animations depends on the time interval you assign and the observation layer of interest. For example, Wind observations change frequently and so animations are most revealing on an hourly time scale. Sea Surface Temperature changes more slowly, so animations will show little change unless observed over a period of days or weeks.

MAP TOOLS

To the left of the main map, you'll find tools that allow you to control the main map. Click on the radio button next to any one of the following features to activate:

Zoom in/Zoom out -- Select the zoom-in icon and click on the area you want to zoom in to. The map zooms and recenters around the area you selected. To zoom out, select the zoom out option and click on any point in the map. The map will zoom out and recenter around the point you selected. Adjust the "Zoom Factor" dropdown to specify how much to zoom in or out with each click

Full extents -- This feature allows you to restore the map to its original geographic extents, rescaling it to its broadest terms, rather than having to zoom out click by click.

Recenter -- Recenter (pan) your map, while keeping the given scale, by clicking on any point of your map after having activated this feature.

Get Info -- Select this tool to get more detail from an individual observation point on the map. Hover the mouse over any data point in your map and the exact observation value for that point will display. These mouseovers are also browser specific and may work differently in your browser.

Click on any data point in your map and a query results popup window will appear with more detail on that observation and station. The query results window contains the observation layer name, Station ID, observation time and date, latitude and longitude of the station, and precise observation value.

From the query results window, a further click on the details and time series icon activates a query results detailed popup window that provides details on the organization managing that station and a graph and table of observation values bracketing your point of interest through time. The specific observation you've click upon is highlighted in red. You may also request a larger temporal bracket of observation data around your point using the dropdown box provided.

Java toggle: Toggling this switch enables the Map Tools within the main map and disables these tools in the Map Tools frame. Tool function remains unchanged. Java functionality is browser specific and so may not work with all browsers.

Locater Map: This small map shows the geographic extents of the main map with a red box. Changes to the main map via the Map Tools will be reflected here.

Predefined Regions: Select one of these predefined SEACOOS regions to zoom the main map to that region. Change will be reflected in the Locater Map as well.

CUSTOMIZE VIEW

Map Layers: A number of layers are available to make the map most useful for you. For a brief description of available map layers click the Layer Info link below the layer list. To display a layer on the main map it must first be selected. Click on individual map layers to select or deselect them as needed. Then click the redraw map button to activate layer changes in the map.

Redraw Map: This button activates any changes made to the Map Layers or Map Units

Printable Map: This button creates a PDF of the current map to print or save

Change Units: This popup window allows you to select the display units for Temperature, Speed, Distance & Elevation, and Water Level Reference.

  • Temperature: degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit

  • Speed: knots, meters per second, or miles per hour
  • Distance & Elevation: kilometers/meters or miles/feet

  • Water Level Reference: Mean Sea Level, Mean Low Low Water, or NAVD88

PREVIOUS VIEWS

Displayed here are thumbnails of the last two map images displayed in the main map. A click on one of these images brings that image back into view within the main map.

DATA PROVIDERS

This table lists currently displayed map layers with SEACOOS data provider details and links for further information. Overpass timestamp details are also provided for remotely sensed data (local time). Hover the mouse over the Prev/Next links to see info on the previous/next overpass for that satellite. Clicking on these links changes the map display those temporal parameters.
