Obs with Modeling

  • What are the observations needed for modeling.
    • Forcing fields
      • N/F uses ETA winds and heat flux. Should the MWG pursue its own regional wind/heat flux product by running a regional atmosphere model?
      • Hindcasts use NOAA EDAS, plus modifications such as OI-blending with observations. Do we want to expand the OI wind product?
      • How should we approach the heat flux problem? For instance, how should the in-situ heat flux information be used? Who will develop comparisons with the heat flux fields such as the EDAS or the EDAS relaxed to Delta (mod.-obs) SST? How do we approach improving on such corrections?
      • How should we approach the river inflow problem? Should we have a standardized SEACOOS fresh water inflow data set?
    • Ocean fields
      • How should we formally compare in-situ obs. with model results? For instance, USF uses vector correlation for hindcasts. Are there other suggested metrics? We presently consider V(x, t), (x, t). We also have T/S and we will soon have HF-radar surface currents. How should these be handled? Note that instantaneous V contains tides and inertial motions, whereas the models may not, or if they do these processes might be more poorly modeled that the wind driven currents. How should we account for such disparities in processes?
      • How should we use models to assess OWG priorities? OSSEs are one way, but a reanalysis by data assimilation is another. From a reanalysis we may learn what data are most important and where the gaps exist in both the data and the models.
      • In advance of OSSEs or reanalyses, where should new OWG priorities go?
    • Near shore salinity gradient region
    • Inner shelf frictional B.L. region
    • Shelf break
      • Do we have enough coastal sea level stations? Hurricane experience in Florida this year suggests that you can never have enough since surge is so local. So what is enough?
      • Implement coastal S.L. comparisons with N/F model.
      • How should we be using SRS products in modeling?
    • Products on native grids
    • Value added products such as OI-SST, OI-Color, etc.
      • How should we be filling data gaps?
    • Data from other programs
    • Data for the NE FL shelf
    • Defining cross-WG focus areas (research topics) for coordinated OWG and MWG efforts in Years 3 and 4
