Fall 2004 EECC Agenda
Extension and Education Coordinating Committee Workshop
From: Chris Simoniello, SEACOOS Regional Extension Coordinator
SEACOOS Workshop brings ocean observing extension practitioners from the southeast US together
Identifying successful components of ocean observing extension activities, creating a list of best practices, and fostering partnerships among ocean observing system extension personnel were three goals of the North Carolina Sea Grant-sponsored SEACOOS Extension Workshop held in Raleigh, North Carolina, September 29-30, 2004. Thirty people, representing a variety of organizations participated. Eight ocean observing programs were represented: CAROCOOPS, COMPS, CORMP, Explorer of the Seas, GoMOOS, Rutgers’s Institute of Marine and Coasta Resources, SEACOOS, and University of South Florida’s Institute for Marine Remote Sensing. In addition, people from OCEAN.US, the NOAA Coastal Services Center, SECOSEE, SECOORA and the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) participated.
Coordinated by Jack Thigpen, NC Sea Grant and myself, the meeting was the product of planning efforts by Lynne Hinkey and Geno Olmi of the NOAA Coastal Services Center, Bob Bacon, the newly elected Sea Grant representative to the SEACOOS Executive Committee, Sandy Bernard of SECOORA, Suzanne van Cooten of the NDBC.
After preliminary talks by Cliff Merz (COMPS), Tom Shyka (GoMOOS), Braxton Davis (CAROCOOPS) and Josh Kohut (Cool Room), participants were tasked with identifying successful components of ocean observing system (OOS)-related extension activities. Specifically, four topics were presented: User Engagement, Public Awareness, Inreach (building relationships between science and extension people), and Information Delivery and Use. The information generated is being used to write a report on the state of ocean observing system extension activities in the southeast. A list of best practices and lessons learned by participants will also be included in the final report. The long-term goals of the SEACOOS Extension Workshop are to 1) use the information generated by workshop participants to formulate a regional plan for OOS-related outreach and extension activities; 2) maintain and build upon the relationships that were formed so that we can begin to achieve continuity in the way OOS-information is presented to the public; and 3) let the outreach and education work groups of nascent regional systems learn from our successes and failures.
The workshop agenda and report are available in Microsoft Word format.
The SEACOOS Economic Benefits Final Report is available in Adobe Reader format.
