NC-COOS (North Carolina Coastal Ocean Observing System), UNC Chapel Hill's sub-regional component of SEACOOS, has completed installation of their first HF Radar system in Duck, NC. This long range SeaSonde unit was purchased from Codar Ocean Sensors earlier this year, along with another unit that will be installed and collecting data by July 1st in Buxton, NC.

Codar HF Radar units individually record currents in the radial direction (bottom left), and when the radial currents of two or more units are combined, total surface current vectors (bottom right) can be formed. The second site (Wildwood, NJ) is owned and maintained by Rutgers University's RUCOOL. UNC and Rutgers are currently openly exchanging hourly radial maps for these two sites. These observations will soon be posted on the SEACOOS website.
